Is it time for some honesty regarding this Letterman / Palin business?

Here's a clip of the Letterman explanation and the jokes themselves http://hotair.com/archives/2009/06/11/video-letterman-non-apologizes-to-palin/ The 3 jokes in question are: 1. Said there was an awkward moment at the Yankee game when A-Rod knocked up Palin's daughter in the 7th inning. 2. Said Palin had a slutty flight attendent look 3. Said there was trouble keeping Elliot Spitzer away from Palin's daughter. Regarding the knocking up the daughter joke. There was no mention nor hint of rape. Letterman says he meant 18 year old Bristol Palin and not 14 year old Willow, even though it was Willow that went to the game. Still regardless of this, neither Bristol nor Palin should have been joked about. Unless Letterman has a history of making jokes of a sexual nature about other non-public figures like Chelsea Clinton or the Obama daughters, he has clearly cross a line that should not have been crossed. The joke about the slutty flight attendant look. Again, when's the last time Letterman made any high profile political woman like Hillary Clinton or Michelle Obama and said they were slutty looking? Even still, Palin IS a public figure, unlike her daughters, and that joke was fair game even if clearly offensive. The joke about keeping Elliot Spitzer away from Palin's daughter was a joke aimed at Spitzer, not Palin's daughter. One last thing. In his 8 minute review and clarification, Letterman never apologized for making any of those jokes. The closest he came was saying he regretted one like he's regretted telling thousands of other jokes. In my opinion, Letterman should apologize for joke #1. If he has class, he would apologize for joke #2. Joke #3 was OK and needs no apology.

Public Comments

  1. Letterman says he meant 18 year old Bristol Palin and not 14 year old Willow, even though it was Willow that went to the game. Uh oh, that must mean.... Letterman's a fraud.
  2. It is uncalled for. Where the jokes about Michelle Obama's tricking herself in chicago.
  3. Agree...I haven't watched Letterman in years...or Leno for that matter. I'll catch Conan on occasion. That format has gotten old and I have no interest in Hollywood.
  4. It was Carl Rove that made family members "fair game". If you have a problem with that, then perhaps you should have gone after him for starting it.
  5. 1. Was out of line 2. As a former airline employee I can tell you that the flight attendant stereotype was quite offensive. Flight Attendants have been some of the nicest women I have ever worked with, and hard working as well. It takes a special kind of person to put up with some of the garbage from passengers that these people put up with. It isn't as if they can get mad and walk out the door at 30 thousand feet. I happen to like Sarah Palin, and I think she is an attractive and smart lady, or she wouldn't have been nominated for the VP job (not because of her looks, but her brain). I have no problem with joking about public figures, just class it up. Heck, even she has a sense of humor. Just look at her exchange with Alec Baldwin on SNL.
  6. he should be taken off the air for his crimes against children. then he needs to be investigated by childrens services, he does have a child of his own and that child could be a victim of abuse.
