City Inn Bristol

Could you please tell me something about Bristol?

I am coming to Bristol for a course and looking forward to find an accommodation. Is it good if you stay in a couple flat inthe university hall? Would you mind tell me How far between the national express or train station and the University? Which area we should live in order to have an easy access to the Bristol university and the supermarkets? Could I go to the supermarkets like Asda or Tesco by walk from the university ? Which transportation ou suggest for a student in Bristol?Which attracting places I should visit on the first days ? Thank you very much .

  1. The Bus Station (where the National Express Coaches drop off/pick up) is about half a mile from the main Bristol University Building in Clifton (however different parts of the University are in different parts of the city - the Veterinary Department is 15 MILES OUTSIDE the city) a VERY steep hill seperates the two. And Temple Meads (train station) is a mile from the same Buildings. A lot of the University Students live in Clifton which is close to some of the University Buildings. There are a LOT of small branches of Tesco's (I work in central Bristol and within 10 minutes walk I can reach 3 of their stores) and Sainsbury's all over the city. If you stay up in Clifton, you will only be a 15 minute walk from Broadmead (which is Bristol's main shopping area) and there is a larger Tesco's store and a Mark's And Spencer's Food Hall. Or in Bedminster there is a VERY large Asda store. Travel everywhere in the city by Bus (the main operator is First, who are VERY good - they do travel cards for Students). On a rainy day visit the Central Art Gallery And Museum (which is not very far from the main university buildings) in Clifton and is FREE to everyone. Or you can go to Bristol Zoo, SS Great Britain, Industrial Museum, Empire & Commonwealth Museum (this is just yards from Temple Meads Station).
  2. Its a dump that much i can tell you Baz
  3. Go to a bookshop - there used to be a Georges at the top of Park Street opposite the original University building and the Museum, and you'll find loads of books about Brisul. One which may still be available is "Walking in Bristol" by Helena Eason - pocket size so easy to carry. Bristol has its fair share of "brain dead" yobs, but although I left there "for a couple of years" husband said, in 1965, i still think of it as my home. Wonderful City, so full of history. Some places to see 1. Obviously the University building top of Park Street 2. Cabot Tower on Brandon Hill - John Cabot sailed in The Matthew (replica down in the docks) to discover America. The SS. Gt. Britain down on the Avon, too. 3. The Clifton Suspension Bridge designed by a marvellous engineer called Brunel 4. Clifton Downs are great for walks - has a compact Zoo (where I got engaged!) 5. The Old Vic theatre - where Peter O'Toole started 6. The Llandowger Trow pub (of "Treasure Island" fame) 7. St. Mary Redcliffe church - described by Queen Elizabeth the First as "the fairest and godliest church in England" - it has magnificent flying buttresses 8. You'll probably enjoy visiting the docks - restaurants & bars - and the Floating Harbour with King Neptune. 9. Very good Central library next to the Cathedral 10. The Cathdral is well worth seeing - if there is a guide you'll learn a lot about it - the steps worn down by generations of monks. The special Miserere (sp?) seats for the infirm. I could go on forever. Give my love to my home - shame about the traffic congestion - I used to cycle everywhere.
  4. I think some of the other contributers have answered your practical questions but I just want to tell you Bristol is NOT a dump. I've spent about 6 months there in total and I thinks it's a great place. It's also good for accessing Wales, Bath and the Cotswalds so ignore the snotty comments and you'll have a great time. Enjoy!
